I don't think I am comfortable with the notion that satan is setting us up for something, and God looks at this and decides whether or not we need to be taught a lesson. (although I don't rule it out) My feeling is that we are born of a sinful nature, and each of us has our weaknesses. We will naturally be drawn toward those weaknesses because of our sinful nature. Sometimes it seems that when things are going really well in life, we let God's presence from our daily lives slip. Then our proud nature can get us in all sorts of trouble.

But God has laid down a plan for successful living in the bible, and if we truly follow that plan, our trials will be minimized. It is when we stray from God's word that we fall into most of our problems. (yes , this does not explain Job's plight)

But there are other trials that have no bearing on how we live, like the unexpected loss of a loved one. Still, no where in the bible can I find any scriptures saying that living life as a christian will be some sort of utopian cakewalk. Sometimes I feel that many Christians have gotten God and santa claus mixed up, spending all their time asking God to save them from this and deliver them from that. Regardless of what we face, if we have salvation, then it doesnt matter, we are already saved.

If anything, our whole life with all its ups and sometimes terrible downs, and how we handle them is one big trial. In John 6:27 Jesus exhorted his followers not to "labour for that which perishes" but to "labour for that which is eternal." If we follow Christ's words, then it doesn't really matter what we have to face in this world.

God definitely does not, and cannot protect Christians from having trials and troubles. If He did, everyone would want to become a Christian so they would have no more troubles. Although He does ALLOW trials to come, He does give us grace, courage, and strength to go through them, if we let Him. In fact, I believe that it is in these 'valleys' that our faith grows and we become stronger Christians -- IF we allow God to work in us. If we don't allow God to work in us during these stressful times, it is easy to blame God for trouble (instead of Satan), and turn away from Him in bitterness.

One quote from Winston Churchill I heard is: "When you find yourself going through hell, keep going!" Good idea! I wrote a song called "He Will See Me Through" that basically says that God hasn't promised that we will have life easy; He promises that He will see us through our problems, and walk with us hand in hand until we can see Him face to face. One thing I have learned in the past few years is that God knows ahead of time that certain things will happen to us; BUT He already has a plan in mind to work things out for us. So, instead of worrying, just trust God, knowing He already has the solution to the problem. This has really helped me understand and trust God more.

I hope this helps!

AKgracealone has a good point - a) I DO NOT want to worship a god that says "Yeah, you can beat up my kid", and b) it is a question of semantics/wording.
I think the question is really referring to whether God _allows_ the evil one to do evil to us. In other words, the evil one kills, steals, and destroys but that does not mean that God would let him off by not burning him in hellfire for what he has done ( OK, if you believe differently, I don't want someone climbing on my case - I think God is going to let the devil have it one of these days. If you disagree, don't yell ). In order for the evil one to be held accountable for what he has done, God would not be OK'ing the evil done.
To put it another way, the Bible says God does not tempt anyone ( somewhere in James, I think ). Yes what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but God giving permission for others to hurt His children doesn't strike me as loving... my two cents...

I have a real problem with the idea of God saying "OK" to Satan's actions in causing trials. I can guess what the pastor may have been saying, so this may be just an exercise in semantics -- but I still can't quite agree. I have read and studied the book of Job. I'm glad it was there for our example and knowledge. But I wonder if God really said "OK" in the way we think of it in human terms? Part of my problem with this idea goes back to my own childhood. I attended church on my own from the time I was very young, believing seriously in God. Yet, I also suffered seriously because of choices my mother made. I remember my Bible class teacher talking about how God protects His children, at the same time I was being harmed. Did God say "OK" to my trials caused by my mother's bad choices? Years later I was still horribly afraid of God even while I kept going to church. I was terrified of the idea God allowed those things to happen. If such horrid things could happen while I was seeking God's will, what would happen if I quit going to church? It was years before I finally realized God's very character forces Him to allow the consequences of sin. He has given mankind freedom of choice, and His love requires He honor those choices even while it must twist His heart at times. Christ's death on the cross is the proof that it is not "OK". For what ever reason, there are moments God directly intervenes, and other times when He doesn't. I am looking forward to the time I can ask Him, face to face, why some things happened the way they did. He may allow Satan's afflictions for this moment of time, but I cannot believe He says it's "OK". How can Divine Love be OK with the pain and afflictions here? He may have to allow it, much of it may sift through His fingers, He rejoices as we learn to trust Him, and I'm sure He yearns even more than we do for the day He will make all things new again -- the day sin and death will be destroyed. Then it will be divinely OK.
